What is the origin of the Mexican Milagritos?

These handicrafts have their origins in the southeastern part of Mexico, mainly in the state of Oaxaca, and there are traces of Milagritos since colonial times.

It is believed that they were originated by ancient tinsmiths, who dedicated their free time to make decorative objects, such as jars, food utensils and Milagritos.

Today, you can find a variety of them in Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende, two cities considered the main artisans of the Milagritos and where you will see a lot of different designs and models, such as: frames, mirrors, vases and much more.

Why were they called Mexican Milagritos?

In ancient times, it was believed that when a miracle occurred, one had to go to the churches and give thanks with a bronze medal, just like Hernán Cortés, who had his milagrito in gratitude for having survived the sting of a scorpion.

Therefore, having a Milagritos handicraft, meant to be in grace with the heart and represented the Sacred Heart of Jesus, according to the Catholic Church. Over the years, this handicraft took different forms until today we know it as Milagritos, a colorful heart that helps to chase away bad energies.
